Statia is reached by air or ferry via connection from St. Maarten.
The capitol of Statia and the commercial and residential of the island. You'll find historical sites here above and below water. Part of the lower town's old warehouses can be seen underwater from the shoreline. Dive shops, restaurants and bars are also in Oranjestad
If you love history, Statia has a lot of it. Visit 19 fortresses for unbelievable views. The historical museum tells the story of how the island became to be today. Learn and view trading sites, view the old warehouses from the shoreline. Visit 17th century churches each with its own story. The island has 119 historical monuments that will transfer you back in time.
the Quill is the island's dormant volcano, taking up a sizeable portion of the island itself. Hiking the quill takes about 3hrs to the top, best suited for the experienced hiker. Having a guide is advisable. You can hike to the hop and then descend into the crater to see the lush rainforest within. Spot the variety of fauna, crabs butterflies and iguanas. The Quill was designated a national park in 1997 (Boven National park). The park has easier hiking trails for beginners.
Statia has but 3 beaches but they are not crowded with tourists and have no lifeguards.
Zeelandia beach has black and tan sand beach and is not swimmable. Lynch Beach is a small beach with brown sand.
Oranje beach has little sand but calmer waters. All three are quiet places to stow away for a little while.
Statia offers local, relaxed and casual dining and a sprinkle of upscale dining. The national dish is goat meet, rice & peas. The overall cuisine is West-Indian, Cutch and Indonesian. You'll also find spicy stuffed crab, and Chinese restaurants.
Statia has over 30 dive sites for beginners and avid divers. Discover another world of history below see.
